One of our parishioners, Chris Robson, shall be giving an online talk on the story of Christianity in Africa on Wednesday 8th April 2020 at 11.00 am. Many people forget that the early centuries of Christianity were marked by the christianisation of the whole of the north of Africa. The great saints of Anthony of Egypt the father of monasticism, Athanasius, Cyril of Alexandria, Cyprian, Monica and Augustine of Hippo are just a few of the early saints. The Arab invasions in the eighth century destroyed many of these communities, but the faith continued to thrive in Ethiopia, in particular. If you would like to learn about the cave churches of Ethiopia which have a history of over 1600 years, click here. The European colonisers brought about another wave of Christian revival, and now Sub-Saharan Africa has one of the fastest growing Catholic populations in the world. The age of martyrdom continues. One only needs to think of the thousands of Christians murdered by Boko Haram in Nigeria, Burkini Faso, and in the Central African Republic, and the recently canonised Trappist monk-martyrs at Tibberhine in Algeria.
